Live viEUws debate: “How can gas help transform the European power market?

The big energy package this autumn will take on the gargantuan task of overhauling European electricity markets to make them fit for the 21st century. Power markets must be restructured – and better connected – so that that they provide a secure energy system with an ever-rising share of variable renewables. The electricity supply must also remain affordable. Policymakers need to start thinking in terms of system, not generation adequacy. National governments have to think about security of electricity supply in a national, regional and European manner.

How secure are electricity supplies today? How gas can help enhance security of electricity supply? How can it work with “Energy Efficiency First”- one of the pillars of the Energy Union? How does consumer empowerment, on the demand as well as supply side (e.g. prosumers, self-consumption) change the power market and the role gas will play in the future? Can gas help keep the energy transition affordable? How do we make best use of existing infrastructure and what needs might result from this changing role of gas?

What does the EU, Member States, market players and consumers need to do in the power market redesign and updated security of electricity supply directive to prepare for the future? What would be the optimal contribution of gas and which policy framework would deliver it?
